In 1798 Corporal Jose Maria Berdugo (later changed to Verdugo) established
title to the Rancho San Rafael. The Rancho included most of present day
Glendale, Burbank, Eagle Rock and Highland Park. In 1831, Jose Maria
Verdugo died and passed the Rancho San Rafael to his son and daughter
(Julio and Catalina). It was not until 30 years later (1861) that Julio and Catalina divided the Rancho between
them. A series of smaller divisions took place until a court decision known as the "Great Partition" was made in
1871 dissolving the Rancho San Rafael. As smaller parcels were created, many homes and businesses were
developed. Six individuals contributed land to create the original 150 acre townsite which was named Glendale.
This was platted, filed and recorded, with the County Recorder as the "Town of Glendale" in 1887.......<more info> |

The bronze statue of Jedediah Strong Smith, the first American explorer to lead a party
overland to the valley, in 1826, sits on the southeast corner of the City Hall property,
proclaiming it to be "A Welcome Sight."
At this time, the area was known as "Mud Springs" and was part of the Rancho San Jose, the
last Spanish land grant. It was a swamp, several acres in size, and a regular stopping place
for early Indians, as well as later explorers. The Santa Fe Railroad came through in 1887,
and the San Jose Land Co. was formed. The company chose to call the new town San
Dimas, which was then the name of the canyon to the north.................................<more info> |

Sierra Madre is curled up in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountain range. It is a small
quaint, safe, friendly village with storefronts reminiscent of the 1920's and 1930's. Founded
in 1880 and incorporated in 1907, Sierra Madre was developed by an ambitious
entrepreneur named Nathaniel Carter, who purchased the land from Lucky Baldwin in 1875
. He laid out plans for a Utopian community that would be called "Natures Sanitarium". By the
turn of the century, Sierra Madre was a well established, prosperous town with its own
orange groves, water system, post office, city hall and amateur drama society. |
